Brief Review of the Southern California Regional Conference, May 13, at Glendale College, CA:
A diverse group of 149 career development professionals networked and shared of resources to help career counselors and coaches advocate for social change. Representatives from academia, nonprofit, government and business presented best practices for engaging in multicultural competent career counseling and empowering individuals to create systemic change.
During interactive workshops participants learned about opportunities to help protect the rights of the most vulnerable populations we serve. We believe that participants returned to their organizations and practices with a toolbox of successful strategies for actively guiding policies and procedures toward inclusivity, accessibility and fairness. And finally, we hope you have been inspired by ideas on how you can bring career counseling to traditionally underserved populations.

||Keynote Speaker Kenjus Watson teaches courses on Intergroup Dialogue and Intergroup Relations at Occidental College. He has been involved with Dialogue and social justice education since 2004 and has established Dialogue programs at several universities. He presented an enlightening keynote on physical and psychological issues arising from years of racial microagressions (whether implicit or explicit). He identified 3 levels of assaults: verbal and non-verbal, layered assaults (based on a person of color's gender, race, class, sexuality, language immigration status, phenotype, accent or surname) and cumulative . He helped us understand the implications for our practices and provided practical suggestions for individuals to cope better with their environments. Kenjus is doing more research on this topic through his doctoral studies at UCLA. He referred us to "micro insults and offensive mechanism studies by Dr. Chester Pierce (as early as 1970 at the University of Pittsburg) and, more recently, to Dr. Derald Wing Sue at Columbia.
