New O*NET Assessments Available from the Department of Labor
By Linda Hax

Dr. Janet Wall of Sage Solutions presented ICDC participants an overview of the three new assessments available from the Department of Labor. The three assessments – O*NET Interest Profiler, O*NET Work Importance Locater, and O*NET Ability Profiler – offer a whole-person approach to career development.

The O*NET Interest Profiler measures six interest areas compatible with Holland’s Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional categories. It is available in a paper/pencil or computerized version. It can be self-administered and self-interpreted.

O*NET Work Importance Locater is a paper/pencil assessment that measures six work values: Achievement, Relationship, Independence, Support, Recognition, and Working Conditions. It is based on over 30 years of research by leading vocational psychologists on the theory that if work values are satisfied, then workers are happier and more productive. A computerized version called the Work Importance Profiler adds a ranking and rating feature.

The O*NET Ability Profiler measures nine abilities with eleven tests: Verbal Ability, Arithmetic Reasoning, Computation, Spatial Ability, Form Perception, Clerical Perception, Motor Coordination, Finger Dexterity, and Manual Dexterity. It is an updated General Aptitude Test Battery with new as well as reduced number of test items. It allows more time to complete non-speeded tests and has enhanced legibility, format and layout of all tests.

O*NET assessment tools are to be used only for career exploration and counseling. They are not for job selection or selection into job training programs. These tools are available for use in high schools, community colleges, universities, and One-Stop Centers.

Visit www.onetcenter.org to read more about the O*NET assessment tools and download materials. Downloadable materials include test booklets, administration manuals, scoring software, training materials, and interpretive materials. Training support is provided through www.onetacademy.com and includes webinars, How to Administer the AP, and How to Download and Use the Interest Profiler and Work Importance Locator. Training is also available through Dr. Wall, who may be reached at sagesolutions@earthlink.net.

Results from the O*NET assessment tools link directly to the range and depth of occupational characteristics in O*Net and local labor market information reached through CareerOneStop, www.careeronestop.org/.
